This is known as "Sofra", and it was used to place the food where people would sit around it to eat. At that time, and even now, traditionally people there sit in sponges or low sofa sitting.

I think it should be called its real name, not a "dining desk." This is a sofra. It's a dining table, the history of which dates back to early 1300s. It was used for meals, where people would sit around it and share the food.

It brings back good memories for me! How I miss sitting around the sofra and eating pite!!
